Jonathan Howarth completed his race in the Superstock 1000 class in 17th place just outside a point scoring position.

Despite struggling with set up in the differing weather conditions Tom Fisher was again on form throughout qualifying and his time from the dry first session gave him a second row start to Sunday’s 14 lap race as seventh fastest rider.

As the race got underway he dropped back as he came to terms with the bumpy Thruxton tarmac and was held up by riders ahead taking different lines through the corners. But once he settled into his race rhythm he began his move forward, picking off the opposition one by one and taking Grant Whittaker at the chicane to claim eighth place at the chequered flag.

“Once I got past the group ahead who were making desperate moves I settled down and steadily made progress,” said Fisher. “I am really happy with eighth place as it puts me up to joint sixth place in the rider standings. The team have done a great job in difficult conditions this weekend and I have to thank them for all their hard work.”

Meanwhile Tom Young began his race from a fifth row grid position and although he moved up into 15th place in the early stages he began to suffer from arm pump which finally saw him forced to pull into the pits to retire.

“Thruxton is a really difficult circuit and one of the problems that befalls a lot of riders is arm pump. That affected me today and I just couldn’t continue. I am gutted not to finish the race as I was looking at a strong points finish. Hopefully I will be back on form for Oulton Park.”

In the 1000cc class Jonathan Howarth began his campaign from a sixth row grid position and after maintaining his position during the first half of the 15-lap race he began to make his move forward. As he began the final lap he was up to 19th place and crossed the finish line in 17th position just outside the points.

He said: “I struggled in qualifying with set up in the dry then wet conditions but I am sure it will come good in time. I have to thank the team for all their hard work and I am sure I will come back stronger next time.”

Mark Fisher – Team manager said: “It has been a difficult weekend for the team. A lot of hard work was put in by the lads to find a set up that would work in the differing weather conditions. Thruxton is a notoriously bumpy circuit and it was cold and windy which didn’t help matters. Tom Fisher showed us his intentions for the season this week with another fine top 10 and is now joint fifth in the points. Tom Young was unfortunate to be sidelined with the Thruxton curse of arm pump but am sure he will be ok next time out and Jonathan Howarth is improving with every outing so it wont be long before either rider joins Tom Fisher in bringing points back to the team who have worked so hard again this week.”

The next round is at Oulton Park in Cheshire over the May Day Bank Holiday of May 5/6/7.

But Tom Fisher delivered a fine sixth place finish in the Superstock 600 race bringing 10 championship points back to the Wyberton – based team. His teammate Tom Young was unfortunate to get caught out in the slippery conditions crashing out of the top 10 on lap 11 of the planned 22 lapper. Meanwhile Jono Howarth retired the Kawasaki after 11 laps of the Metzeler Superstock 1000 race.

Both Tom Fisher and Tom Young qualified well in the Superstock 600 class and were running seventh and eighth respectively in the first session. The promised rain held off for final qualifying and they dropped down the order somewhat.

Tom Fisher began the race from a sixth row grid position in wet and windy conditions and by the end of the opening lap he was already up to 12th place. As the race progressed he made steady progress, picking the opposition off one by one until he found himself in fifth place. On lap 15 he lost out to Grant Whittaker and crossed the line in sixth place. He was denied the chance to regain his position as a crash brought out the red flag and the finishing positions declared on standings at the end of lap 15.

“That’s not a bad result from 21st on the grid,” said Tom. “We had struggled in qualifying with no grip so we were pleased when the rain came really. Warm-up went well; I was second in that session in the wet so I was well prepared for the race. Once we got underway I just kept plugging away and kept it smooth. Unfortunately the race was red flagged but that’s racing. Sixth place is a good bench mark for the first race of the season so bring on round two!”

Tom Young began his campaign from row three and held station in the opening couple of rounds. But he was caught from behind by another rider which pushed him off line and lost him a few places. Once he recovered he set about catching the group ahead and picked them off one by one with each passing lap. But he was caught out by the slippery conditions at Graham Hill Bend and crashed out of the race on lap 11.

He commented: “Qualifying went quite well, 12th place for me and I felt quite comfortable with that. But the rain came on race day and I struggled a bit in morning warm up as we couldn’t quite get the right set up. We completely changed the bike for the race and it seemed ok. I made a bit of a cautious start in the rain as I just wanted to bring some points home, I was boxed in at the first corner and was about 10th on the first lap but then a few laps into the race someone went into the back of me at Clearways, hit me and sent me wide losing me seven or eight places. I got all that back in the space of four laps and was starting to reel in the leading group but went into Graham Hill bend a little too hot and that was that. I am disappointed but there are lots of positives to take from it and I will put the crash behind me and move on to Thruxton for round two.”

In the Superstock 1000 class Jono Howarth had been having set up problems throughout qualifying but it finally came together for him and he began the race from a seventh row grid position.

By the time the riders took up their grid positions the weather had taken a turn for the worse and it was raining and windy. The track was slippery from fluid contamination in previous races and conditions were far from ideal.

Jono worked his way up through the midfielders into a top 20 position but was pushed onto the gravel on a couple of occasions and decided to pull into the pits to retire sat the end of lap 10.

“The conditions out there were far from ideal and I could see that I wasn’t going to get up into a point scoring position so decided to call it a day,” said Jono. “Riders were crashing at nearly every corner and I thought it best to pull in rather than perhaps join them and cause damage to the bike or injure myself. We will regroup at Thruxton where we hope the weather will be kinder to us and get the championship challenge underway there.”

Team manager Mark Fisher added: “This weekend has been hard for us. But Tom put in a stunning performance in the 600 race and brought us a positive result. That’s a good start to his campaign and I am sure Tom Young and Jono Howarth will soon be joining him in scoring some points for the team.

“I would like to welcome our new sponsors on board and also those who have given us their continued support and hope the weather conditions are more favourable at Thruxton where we will be aiming to repay them with three strong results.”

Free practice and qualifying take place on Friday and Saturday ahead of racing on Sunday. The 15-lap Superstock 1000 race is set for 12.06pm on Sunday and the Superstock 600 race to be run over 14 laps is scheduled for 2.15pm.
